Starting an online business – your first step

The decision has been made. You thought about it, you researched it, and finally you’ve decided that starting an online business is the best choice you can make. Rest assured that although you’re probably a bit frightened right now, you CAN make money on the Internet.

The first thing you’re probably feeling right now is the fear that comes with not knowing what to do. You’re feeling lost. The worst part about it is that you’re feeling quite alone right now. Of course, there will be people who will share some information with you along the way, but the work is up to you. Your success with starting an online business rests squarely on your shoulders.

When you decided you were going to make money on the Internet, one question probably dropped neatly into your lap: where do I start? Perhaps this question doesn’t seem all that scary, but let me assure you, it is. When I was starting an online business, I had no one to turn to; I had to stumble and fall a few times, and I made many mistakes before I finally got my feet comfortably under me. I want to assure you that you’re in good hands here. Though at the end of the day it’s up to you, you’re really not alone.

There’s no game plan to share with you, no step-by-step guide that you can skim through and use. This business doesn’t work that way. One of the first things to understand about starting an online business is that there are options. One of the keys to success is learning to write well. You may sit there and think, “Great, I hate writing!” and that’s okay. There are many ways to make money on the Internet, and some will naturally be more profitable than others. You could use Adsense or sell on Ebay, or maybe you enjoy blogging, but the lesson to be learned with this is that no matter which path you choose, no matter which option you take, all of them require work.

I will give you a number of ways to create a successful online business. But every journey begins with one step: the first one. Let’s take that first step.

I want you to sit down with a pen and some paper and make a list. Write down all of your interests. It doesn’t matter what they are or how absurd or silly they may seem to you. Write them all down. For example, mine consists of: health, computers, music, writing, and games. Don’t censor yourself. If you come up with twenty, write them all down.

Make this list and we’ll pick up with it next time. That’s it, that’s your first step!
